postheadericon Let another low-cost carrier cater for Borneo, gov’t urged

The government should consider awarding another low-cost carrier a licence to cater for the greater Borneo and the Asean region through a new airline called Borneo Airways, Movement for Change, Sarawak (MoCS) leader Francis Paul Siah said today.

He suggested the new licence be given to the Sarawak and Sabah governments to jointly establish an airline to serve the interests of east Malaysians.

?An airline owned by Sabah and Sarawak is long overdue,? he said in a statement in Kuching.

Does Ekran Air ring a bell? Or SAEAGA Airlines (SAbah/SArawak dan East ASEAN Growth Area)? Maybe those in Sabah, especially in Kota Kinabalu can tell us what happen to Ekran Air as this airline is base in Sabah and rumoured to be owned by Ting Pek Khing or Ekran Bhd.

In Parliament yesterday, Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman proposed that the government award another low-cost carrier a licence to give some competition to AirAsia.

The MoCS leader said that there was a ready airline boss in Sarawakian Seri Idris Jala, the current Minister in the Prime Minister?s Department, who could helm a new airline.

?Idris has done well in Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and he would also have a ready pool of airline staff if MAS was to trim its personnel as part of its current restructuring exercise,? he said.

He said what is left now is the political will of the two state governments to venture into the airline industry which should not be considered ?unchartered territory? now. – Bernama
