PKR Miri chief Dr Michael Teo rebutted Sarawak Energy Berhad?s claim which implied support by the people affected by the proposed Baram Dam project.

SEB?s chief executive officer Torseten Dale Sjotveit had earlier dismissed Save Rivers chairman Peter Kallang?s claim that they did not conduct studies on the area for the proposed dam, and that the geological work was done with complete disregard for the local people.

?Baram Dam will flood 38,900 hectares of land and affect 24 villages and longhouses ? the SEB CEO claimed it will benefit the people, but did not explain how flooding their properties will help them,? said Dr Teo, who insisted that the estimated 20,000 people affected by the dam did not welcome the project.

Dr Teo also disagreed that the affected people were ignorant or did not know what SEB was up to.

He said the people who welcomed the SEB team and the 350 people who had a dialogue session with SEB did not represent the interest of all the 20,000 affected people.

?Besides, who is SEB to say that the activists opposing the project do not represent the Baram folk and have their own interest, when SEB is also an outsider and has its own interest in the costly project?? he asked.
